JD Vance’s motorcade hit by shrapnel from California military exercise
An artillery shell struck part of Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail during a live-fire display marking the Marine Corps 250th anniversary in California over the weekend, according to new reports.
A 155mm round, fired at 1:46 p.m. on Saturday, detonated early and fragments hit a California Highway Patrol vehicle and a motorcycle traveling with the vice-president, according to a patrol report cited by The New York Times. The highway was cleared and reopened little over a half hour later, according to the report.
California Governor Gavin Newsom had called the White House “reckless” for going ahead with the display.
He wrote in a message posted to X Sunday: “We love our Marines and owe a debt of gratitude to Camp Pendleton, but next time, the Vice President and the White House shouldn’t be so reckless with people’s lives for their vanity projects.”
This is a breaking story. Updates to follow.
