Jimbo Fisher Looking for Coaching Job Amid Likely Florida State Opening

Amid a 3-4 start and 0-4 record in ACC play, Florida State University athletic director Michael Alford released a statement on Monday regarding the status of embattled head coach Mike Norvell.

FSU intends to retain Norvell through the remainder of the regular season, but noted that a “comprehensive assessment” is coming at the end of the campaign.

“As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season’s end,” Alford wrote. “Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks.”

The college football world mostly believes it’s a foregone conclusion that FSU is biding its time to come up with the money to pay Norvell’s buyout and secure a top-tier replacement for 2026.

A former head coach of Florida State is set to enter the coaching carousel at the same time.

Per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Jimbo Fisher has been plotting his comeback to college football, watching film and coming up with a plan to compete in the new era of NIL funding and conference expansion.

Fisher has not coached since Texas A&M fired him in 2023 after going 45-25 in six seasons with the Aggies. He misses being a part of a major program.

“When you’re away from something, it makes you reflect,” Fisher said. “I’m back to watching film and have those feelings. I miss the players and those relationships. I miss practice. I miss the grind. I live to coach. I love to do what I did.”

Fisher made it clear that he has no plans to retire after receiving a buyout of $77.5 million from Texas A&M.

“I never got into coaching for money,” he says. “Well, I’m not going to get out of it because I’ve got money.”

Fisher went 83-23 during his eight seasons with FSU, including winning the 2023 national title. He resigned from Florida State after a 5-6 season in 2017 to take the job with the Aggies.

It’ll be interesting to see if Fisher or the Noles entertain the possibility of a reunion in 2026. Neither Fisher nor FSU ever reached the heights of 2013 after their divorce in 2017.
