Jimmy Butler, Warriors Agree to Extension Following Blockbuster Trade

ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania has reported that the Miami Heat have sent star forward Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and a protected first-round NBA Draft pick.

Now, more details have emerged on the deal, revealing what else it is costing Golden State.

“New Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler has agreed to a new two-year, $121 million extension with the franchise through 2026-27, sources tell me and [Brian Windhorst],” Charania said on X (formerly Twitter). “Butler is declining his 2025-26 player option for this new $121M deal.”

It also appears that this trade is involving multiple teams, including the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons.
The Warriors are sending Schroder and Anderson to the Jazz and Raptors respectively while PJ Tucker of the Jazz is returning to the Heat.
Needless to say, this trade seems incredibly complicated, but not nearly as complicated as Butler’s relationship with Miami.

Butler has proven to be a star for the Heat, leading the team to two unexpected NBA Finals appearances. However, things have been tough between Butler and the organization as of late.
Earlier in the year, Butler publicly requested a trade from the Heat, something that rubbed the higher-ups the wrong way. A day later on Jan. 3, 2025, he was suspended by the Heat for seven games, citing “conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks.”

After returning to the team, Butler was suspended again by Miami for two days.
Eventually, the Heat gave in and began looking for a trade for Butler, and it seems that he has found his new home in the Bay Area.

Butler has played in the NBA since he was selected in the 2011 NBA Draft with the 30th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls.
Since then, he has also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers, and Heat.
Butler is a six-time NBA All-Star and led the league in steals in 2021. He also won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
