John Daly Earns a PGA Tour Champions Retirement Message from Golf Legend
John Daly, the larger-than-life figure, has always been a magnet for attention on the PGA Tour. During his active era, Daly earned two major titles – the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship.
He even shared his deep-seated desire to play as he played during his 1995 British Open victory during a podcast with FULL SEND PODCAST in 2021. However, his current performance suggests that this wish might be far from achievable.
The 59-year-old’s latest outing at the PGA Tour Champions Insperity Invitational ended with a score of 27-over par, a far cry from his glory days, when he carded 282 over four rounds to claim the title.

Mark Calcavecchia, his PGA Tour Champions mate, was quick to relate to his struggles. After Daly’s performance, Calcavecchia took to Twitter to deliver a lighthearted jab, tweeting:
“Thanks John Daly, u eclipsed my 26 over last week by a shot this week. The end is near, my friend. We had a good run, buddy.”
Thanks @PGA_JohnDaly u eclipsed my 26 over last week by a shot this week. The end is near my friend. 😩. We had a good run buddy

Calcavecchia actually shot 27-over par himself in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, where Jerry Kelly snagged the title.
But his tongue-in-cheek comment pokes fun at both their declining games, humorously suggesting it’s time for retirement.
The two golfing legends have maintained a playful relationship since their heyday, often exchanging witty remarks.
One of their iconic historical memories dates back to the 1992 Players Championship, where they were fined for “conduct unbecoming a professional” due to finishing their round in a speedy two hours and three minutes with scores of 80 and 81.
Although Calcavecchia later clarified the fine wasn’t actually for playing too fast, the anecdote showcases their joyful relationship. As both golfers navigate their senior careers, their banter continues to bring smiles to fans’ faces.
What do you think was Calcavecchia right about Daly? Let us know in the comment section below.
