Joy-Anna Duggar Breaks Major Family Rule
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Joy-Anna Forsyth (née Duggar) is challenging the fashion boundaries that once defined her family’s strict dress code.
In a photo shared to the 19 Kids & Counting alum’sInstagram page on Saturday November 23, the 27-year-old gave fans a glimpse into her daily routine of managing life with her three children — Gideon, 6, Evelyn, 4, and Gunner, 18 months.
The video showed a peek at Joy-Anna’s life, including her husband Austin Forsyth. It then cut to the young mom hitting the gym after her morning drop-offs, and most notably, she was wearing athletic shorts –– a choice that would have once been considered unacceptable by her parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.

While fans didn’t seem to comment on the rule breaking, they did love seeing a look at the former TLC star’s routine.
“I love seeing you and your sisters flourish in your own environments and seeing how you all chose to live and parent,” said one fan. Another commended the influencer on her workout, saying, “Girllll!!!! Way to go taking the gym for yourself!!!!! Lift those weights! 😍🔥👏”
In an episode of the Unplanned Podcast from October, Joy-Anna opened up about the clothing restrictions imposed by her parents, revealing that the family had a strict dress code that applied to both boys and girls. She explained that Jim Bob and Michelle “had this standard because they didn’t want guys showing their thighs,” which led to the rule that no one in the family, regardless of gender, could wear shorts. “Shorts are kind of on the line,” she explained, noting that her brothers didn’t wear shorts until they were well into their teenage years.
Joy-Anna isn’t the only Duggar sibling to bend the family’s strict dress code. In her 2021 memoir, The Hope We Hold: Finding Peace in the Promises of God, Jinger Vuolo (née Duggar) shared how their mother dressed them in skirts and dresses following the biblical principle from Deuteronomy 22:5. However, Jinger, 30, revealed that her understanding of modesty evolved as she reexamined scripture. Jill Dillard (née Duggar), 33, has also been photographed wearing ripped jeans, while oldest sister Jana Wissman (née Duggar), 34, has been spotted in shorts.
