Justin Thomas’ Record-Setting PLAYERS Round has PGA Tour Pros in Awe

Justin Thomas went into full blackout mode Friday at The PLAYERS Championship, where he tied the course record at 10-under 62.

He also broke the record for most birdies made in a single round at TPC Sawgrass Stadium course with 11.

His performance had most watching the golf tournament at a standstill.

Everyone wanted to see if he could do it, and while his performance did not set a new record, it was still incredible.

“That was one of the best rounds I’ve played, for sure,” Thomas said. “Mentally it was the biggest thing. I felt like I did an unbelievable job of keeping my eyes forward, keeping my blinders on, not looking backwards, forwards, anything like that. It was, ‘How can I put this ball in the fairway off the tee, and then how can I make birdie, and let’s rinse and repeat.’ I putted the ball beautifully, too…”

“When I get it going, I keep it going. I started to get a little defensive, it’s not me. It’s just funny, Rev and I talked about this week, when I do get it going, keep it going. Don’t be bashful. I’m playing well; otherwise, I wouldn’t have that many under par. That’s what I did today.”

Thomas shot a full 16 shots better than he did on Thursday when he opened his PLAYERS tournament with a 6-over 78.

Smylie Kaufman, Kevin Kisner and Rickie Fowler got a front row seat to Thomas making his 11th birdie of the day on the par-3 17th, the famous island green. When Thomas sank the 18 footer for birdie, he looked toward the trio and saluted them.

They were out there for his Happy Hour Show on Golf Channel, and that is when history happened.

Kaufman tipped his cap to Thomas on X for an astounding round.

The TV personality was among many enthralled by Thomas’ performance. Golf fans were locked in to see his record-breaking day.

No one expected Thomas to come out and shoot a 62, but he did.

These reactions put what happened for Thomas on Friday into perspective to show those who missed it.

Many focused on the birdies and course-tying score, but leave it up to golf stat guru Justin Ray to find another impressive stat to pile onto Thomas’ performance.

Thomas picked up +9.43 strokes gained total, which is the most since Ken Duke shot a 64 and picked up +10.59.

Ray also noted that his 16 shot swing is the biggest improvement from round 1 to round 2 at TPC Sawgrass.

Barstool Sports personality Trent played in the Creator Classic and posted a 61 on the back nine, so he chose to have a little fun with Thomas.

It just shows how good these PGA Tour stars are.

Not only did Thomas make the cut, but he also put himself into the Top 30. He jumped 105 spots up the leaderboard and has given himself a chance.

The 2021 PLAYERS champ sits just seven shots off the leaders Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia, who are 11-under through 36 holes.
