Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Kathy Bates is one of the most recognizable actresses in film and television, and fans have noticed quite a transformation as of late.

In an interview with People, which was published on Wednesday, October 9, Bates, 76, opened up about her weight loss journey. The Matlock actress set the record straight about rumors of her using Ozempic. She revealed that she lost 80 pounds after changing her diet and exercise habits over the past seven years, and an additional 20 pounds after taking the weight loss drug.

“There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic,” Bates said. “But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.”

Bates began changing her dietary habits in 2017 after she was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. She also revealed the moment that prompted her to implement more control over what she eats.

“I ate because I was afraid, and I ate because it was a F-U to my self-esteem,” Bates said. “[Diabetes] runs in my family, and I’d seen what my father had gone through. He had had a leg amputation. One of my sisters is dealing with it very seriously, and it terrified me. It scared me straight.”

The American Horror Story actress has long been open about her battles with ovarian and breast cancers, as well as lymphedema. She was diagnosed with lymphedema, a disease that causes swelling in the limbs, in 2012, however, she said that she’s seen positive changes with her lymphedema symptoms since making changes to her diet.

“It’s been a tremendous benefit for me,” Bates said. “I’m lucky that I don’t have to wear my compression sleeves every day. It’s such a thrill to be able to put my arm into a jacket and it fits.”

The changes she’s made have also helped her perform better as an actress, as she’s discovered through Matlock.

“Physically, I’m capable of doing this show,” said Bates. “I don’t have to sit down. I can stand up all day long and walk and move and breathe and do so many things that I couldn’t before.”

Fans can see Bates on Matlock Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
