Kohberger Pleads Guilty in Murder of Four Students. What’s Next?

🎙️ Voice is AI-generated. Inconsistencies may occur.
Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty in a courtroom Wednesday to four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022.
The plea came amid mixed reactions from victims’ families; some of whom say the agreement blindsided them.
The case was set to go to trial in August after years of back and forth in the case including subpoenas and gag orders.
Now, the case will move onto the sentencing phase where a judge will determine the punishment for the killings.
Idaho does allow for the death penalty with the primary means now being firing squad. Previously the state completed executions via lethal injection but in 2024, a lethal injection failed.
Newsweek has reached out to an attorney for Kohberger via email Wednesday for further comment.
