Landlord Visits Tenant, Shock Over What They Find in Bathroom

When a landlord entered a tenant’s apartment, what they found in the bathroom wall left them stunned—and sparked an internet frenzy.
A viral Reddit post has captured the attention of tens of thousands of viewers after the landlord (u/stefanzah22) shared an image of a tiled bathroom wall with the unexpected and unexplained defect: a large drill hole.
An accompanying text in the post read: “Neighbors drilled my wall…TWICE.” The post, shared on October 26 to the subreddit r/wellthatsucks, has since been upvoted more than 19,000 times.
The landlord added in the comments section that they placed some paper in the hole, to prevent (or at least try to) any further issues.
The image quickly drew astonishment and amusement from Reddit users, who could not believe the apparent lack of awareness—or concern—by the neighbors responsible.
The placement of the drill hole, not just into a shared wall but directly into the bathroom’s tile, raised concerns about potential water damage and serious questions about what, exactly, the neighbors were doing.
“In the bathroom too. Privacy will never feel the same,” one viewer said.
The absurdity of the image—and the simplicity of the complaint—also sparked a flood of lighthearted responses.
“Classic,” another shared. “Drill until you don’t feel pressure with a 12inch bit.”
“Put a kaleidoscope on there,” another said. “If they look in the hole they’ll think they found the fourth dimension.”
“Make it bigger and you might be in for a treat,” another added.
The post also drew practical advice from other landlords and homeowners. Several warned that damage to shared walls can lead to long-term problems.
“Not only did they drill your wall, they compromised the waterproofing in your shower,” one viewer shared. “If you’re renting bring this up immediately, if you’re an owner talk to your neighbor and possibly a lawyer. But don’t use that shower until its patched or you could get mold.”
“No matter how you handle that part of it, you need to make this a teachable moment,” another added. “So many things here. For one, they’re drilling into a wet wall.”
“They’re drilling a hole that is obviously not into a stud. They’re using way too big a drill bit for the pilot hole as well as too long of a bit anyway. I saw you said you are the landlord. Charge them for the tile replacement but also teach them how to do it right so they don’t’ damage other walls. Or ask them to get you to go do it,” they added.
