Lane Kiffin Reacts to Steve Sarkisian’s Staff Hire at Texas
Lane Kiffin made the bold decision to leave the Ole Miss Rebels in the middle of a highly anticipated College Football Playoff run to accept the head coaching position at LSU.
Remaining in the SEC, he has now become one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, agreeing to a seven-year, $91 million contract.
While the move drew significant backlash, Kiffin has handled it well. He’s already been highly active in recruiting ahead of the Jan. 2 transfer portal window and consistently works to promote the program as he looks to rebuild a Tigers team that hasn’t truly competed for a national championship since Joe Burrow led them to the title in 2019.

Kiffin has also maintained his presence on social media, something he was well known for in Oxford. On Thursday, he reacted to news out of the SEC regarding the Texas Longhorns, who fired defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and passing game coordinator Duane Akina. Kwiatkowski’s replacement will be longtime college coach and former Longhorns DC Will Muschamp, who Kiffin knows well from their time coaching together under Nick Saban at Alabama.
Kiffin responded to the news with a simple clapping hands emoji, retweeting Texas’ announcement of the hire.
Muschamp was a key part of the Longhorns’ run to the BCS National Championship in 2009, leading a defensive front that ranked first in the nation in stopping the run, third-down defense, and takeaways.
“This is an exciting day for the Muschamp family,” Muschamp said in a statement. “We loved our time in Austin and truly enjoyed everything about working with Texas Football. We’re thrilled to be returning to a program with one of the richest and proudest histories and traditions in college football. With what Coach Sark has done in rebuilding this program — knowing there are even better days ahead — I was fired up for the opportunity.”
