Lauren Boebert Rebuked in Home State Newspaper Column: ‘Sycophantic’

Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert has been called “sycophantic” for her support of Donald Trump during his hush money trial.

Writing for The Colorado Sun, columnist Mike Littwin called Boebert “disgusting” and “hypocritical” after she and other Republicans attended the trial, which will determine whether Trump falsified business records over payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep an alleged affair between them secret ahead of the 2016 election. Trump denies the charges.

On Tuesday, several Republican officials, including Boebert, a MAGA Trump supporter, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Florida Rep. Cory Mills were photographed attending Trump’s hush money trial while wearing dark blue suits and red ties, an outfit frequently worn by Trump.

Littwin said Boebert, who was heckled at the trial, was defending someone who was “doing all he can to trash the American system of criminal justice.”

He wrote: “Whether Trump is found guilty or not of book-fixing, he is definitely guilty of catch-and-kill sleaziness, of 10 counts of contempt of court, and, not incidentally, of doing all he can to trash the American system of criminal justice. And that’s the person Boebert came to defend.”

While at the trial, Boebert posted on X, formerly Twitter, attacking Michael Cohen, a key witness for the prosecution.

In another post, she mentioned the daughter of New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, who is overseeing Trump’s case.

“I wonder if I’ll run into Judge Merchan’s daughter here in court today. She’s probably too busy being paid millions and millions of dollars by Democrat campaigns all across the country and won’t be able to make it. She’s likely busy working for Shifty Schiff again today ….” she wrote, referring to Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff.

Merchan imposed a gag order on the former president in March, which prohibits the Republican from making public comments about prosecutors, witnesses, or jurors involved in the case, or their families. The judge expanded the gag order in April to include prohibitions on Trump making statements about Merchan’s family or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s.

Littwin said Boebert attended the trial to say things that Trump could not because of the order.

“Boebert didn’t stop at Cohen, though,” he said. “Without any evidence and merely repeating pre-gag-order Trumpist talking points, Boebert went on to trash the judge’s daughter. Because Trump isn’t allowed to.

“Disgusting? Of course. Sycophantic? Sure. Hypocritical?

He also accused Boebert of “hypocrisy” for asking for privacy for her family, but tweeting about the judge’s family.

He also slammed her for not attending her son’s trial to instead attend Trump’s.

Tyler Boebert is currently facing 22 charges, including one felony count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, according to Colorado’s Rifle Police Department and documents from Garfield County Jail. He is also facing charges including alleged misdemeanors, property thefts, and breaking into cars in his hometown of Rifle, Colorado.

Newsweek contacted Boebert by email to comment on this story.

Speaking to Newsweek, Christopher Phelps, a professor of modern American history at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, said Boebert was motivated by political considerations.

“Showing up at a like-minded politician’s trial can hardly be faulted in itself,” he said. “Boebert badly needs to position herself as a Trump ally to win her Republican primary next month in a new district in Colorado, having fled her old one after being filmed groping her date during a theatrical performance and being belligerent with staff who tried to stop her from vaping.

“However, Boebert also lent herself as an attacker of the judge’s daughter, saying things Trump himself has been forbidden from saying by the judge. In that manner she is part of Trump’s smear campaign against a justice system that is actually functioning at a high standard of fairness in determining whether he was guilty of a felony offense by secretly bribing a porn star not to go public about their affair at the height of the 2016 campaign.”
