Several school districts across Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire have delayed or canceled classes Friday as bad winter weather created hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute.

Forecasters warned that wintry conditions moving through the region could persist into the late morning, bringing periods of snow and ice that could make untreated roads and sidewalks dangerous.

The weather system prompted school administrators to adjust schedules to allow additional time for road treatment and safer travel.

Local officials urged drivers to use caution, noting that freezing rain and sleet can create rapidly changing road conditions, even where snowfall totals remain modest.
