Loaded Dodgers Need Reinforcements; Does Cardinals Pitcher Fit Their Plan?
🎙️ Voice is AI-generated. Inconsistencies may occur.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the better teams in baseball despite struggling with injuries as much as anybody. Their pitching staff has been especially destroyed by arm injuries.
With that in mind, the talented Dodgers are going to need to make a few trades this season if they want to stay atop the National League West.
Colin Keane of Sports Illustrated recently suggested the Dodgers could pursue a trade for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Steven Matz this season.

“The Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing another title and will be looking to add at the trade deadline,” Keane wrote. “With a depleted pitching staff due to injuries, the Dodgers must be scouring the market for versatile arms to bolster their bullpen.
“The Cardinals, aiming to reduce payroll and invest in youth, might be enticed by a Dodgers prospect package. There will be multiple suitors for Matz if and when he hits the trade block, but the Dodgers have a way of presenting the best offer and outbidding the competition. Keep an eye on St. Louis and Los Angeles as trade partners between now and July 31.”
Matz has looked good this season, but he’s gotten lit up his last two times out. The Dodgers are desperate for pitchers, but they might not be desperate enough to go after Matz.
While his ERA looks solid this year, there are plenty of better options on the market for Los Angeles to pursue. It would be more realistic to link the Dodgers to a star like Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals rather than a streaky lefty like Matz.
