Map Shows 6 States Under Warning as Temperatures May Drop Below Freezing

Numerous states in the north and mid-Atlantic face a freeze warning overnight Thursday as temperatures could drop to hover around 32 degrees, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns.

Newsweek reached out to the agency via email Thursday for comment.

Why It Matters

The NWS has issued the freeze warnings to help farmers, gardeners and homeowners prepare for the risks posed by plummeting temperatures, which can threaten sensitive agricultural yields and damage plumbing and outdoor infrastructure.

What To Know

In the alert, the NWS says that the warning goes into effect at 11 p.m. Thursday in New York and 2 a.m. Friday for the other affected states and wind down at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. Friday.

The states impacted by the warning include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and New York.

The areas in New York under the warning are in northern Saratoga, Washington and southeast Warren Counties, the NWS says. Portions of northwest, southwest and western Pennsylvania, along with eastern and northern West Virginia are also impacted. The Mountain State’s regions under the warning include northwest Pocahontas, northwest Randolph, southeast Pocahontas, southeast Randolph and southeast Webster Counties.

In the mid-Atlantic, portions of western Maryland, northwest and western Virginia also face the warning Friday. Crawford and southern Erie Counties in Ohio are under the warning too, the NWS says.

Temperatures could drop as low as 30 degrees in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. West Virginia and Ohio could see temperatures in the high 20s. New York may see temperatures at or below freezing, the NWS says.

Below is a map of the impacted states:

What People Are Saying

NWS Pittsburgh, on X Thursday: “Reminder: A Frost Advisory and Freeze Warning are in effect tonight from 2am to 9am EDT. Consider taking action now to protect sensitive outdoor vegetation. Please note that Frost/Freeze alerts will continue until 11/1 or until a county area experiences a widespread freeze.”

NWS-Baltimore-Washington, on X Thursday: ‘Chilly overnight temps in the 30s for most of the region and as low as the 20s along the Allegheny Front are likely. Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings are in effect for parts of the region through Friday Morning. Please take steps to protect tender plants from the cold.”

What Happens Next

The freeze warnings are expected to expire by Friday morning in most regions, as temperatures warm up after sunrise.

Until then, the NWS urges residents to take precautionary measures like insulating pipes and covering sensitive plants. Residents and travelers should remain alert for updates on shifting weather conditions.
