Mariners Make Blockbuster Trade, Acquire Dbacks Josh Naylor
The Seattle Mariners kicked off their trade deadline activity Thursday by acquiring a former All-Star from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Josh Naylor, an American League All-Star in 2024 with the Cleveland Guardians, was traded by the struggling Dbacks with one week to go before baseball’s July 31 trade deadline, according to multiple reports Thursday.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to report Naylor was going to Seattle. Jeff Passan of ESPN was first with the full terms of the trade.
Left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi are headed back to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Seattle Mariners for first baseman Josh Naylor, sources tell ESPN. That’s the full trade.
And so begins deadline season. Buckle up.

The Mariners are reportedly sending left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Naylor, who was slashing .292/.360/.447 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs this season.

In a trade deadline perceived to be especially favorable to sellers, Naylor was on a short list of the best hitters available. A left-handed slugger, he finished last season with 31 home runs, 108 RBIs, and a .243 batting average for Cleveland.
After Naylor helped the Guardians advance to the AL Championship Series, he was traded straight-up for pitcher Slade Cecconi in December.

The Diamondbacks’ attempt to get back to the World Series after a disappointing 2024 season never took off. Through Wednesday they were 50-53, needing to pass four teams to make up their 5.5-game deficit in the National League Wild Card race.
Seattle, at 54-48 and second in the American League West to the Houston Astros, holds the second Wild Card position in the AL. But they’re in a virtual tie with the Boston Red Sox (55-49) and only 1.5 games ahead of both the Tampa Bay Rays (53-50) and Texas Rangers (53-50). One poor weekend could drop them out of playoff position altogether.

The Naylor trade could move the needle for a team that missed the postseason in 2024 and has never won a World Series in its history.
Josh Naylor will probably cost less than Eugenio Suarez (who looks like he’ll spark a bidding war), guess Mariners thought they could strike early and pay less for someone who could help them a lot at a position of need. In a vacuum you prefer Suarez’ quality of contact plus D.

Both the Mariners and the Diamondbacks might not be done making moves with seven games to go.

If Arizona chooses to dismantle its roster altogether, third baseman Eugenio Suarez and pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen could fetch a handsome return in prospects. According to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, the Mariners plan to remain engaged with the Diamondbacks on a potential Suarez trade.

The Mariners’ 115 OPS+ as a team is fourth in MLB. But their top-heavy starting rotation has a 3.95 ERA, 15th in MLB, while their bullpen (3.90 ERA) has struggled to bridge the middle innings to All-Star closer Andres Munoz.
Don’t be surprised if the Mariners pick up a reliever or two, if nothing else. They already sent a message to the rest of MLB by acquiring Naylor on Thursday: trade deadline season has arrived.
