It has been a week since the biggest trade in NBA history between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks took place.

February 1, 2025, will go down in NBA history as the day the Mavericks traded away their superstar and face of the franchise, Luka Dončić, to the Lakers in exchange for fellow superstar, center Anthony Davis.
The trade shocked many, especially Lakers and Mavericks fans. Lakers fans were mixed with emotions as they traded away their superstar for a younger superstar.
However, in Dallas, the mood was filled with confusion that turned into anger for many.
People are still perplexed and saddened by the questionable move on the Mavericks’ side, especially their majority owner, Mark Cuban.

In a conversation with Bill Gates at the Eisemann Center in Richardson on Friday night, Cuban was blunt in his first public response about the trade that sent the international superstar he drafted to Los Angeles.
“I’ve had a rough week,” Cuban told Gates to begin the event per Sarah Hepola of The Dallas Morning News.
“If after you left Microsoft, you found out that (ex-Microsoft CEO) Steve Ballmer traded Windows 11—like, the new hot operating system—for Windows 10, the Hall-of-Fame but older operating system, what would you do?” Cuban asked.
“I might have to hide from the press,” Gates replied.
“I know a couple of other people that are in that situation,” Cuban said to laughter and applause.
Cuban is no longer the majority owner of the Mavericks. Instead, he holds a minority share and is no longer involved in day-to-day basketball operations.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison was at the forefront of the move. The families of Dr. Miriam Adelson and Sivan and Patrick Dumont now stand as the team’s controlling owners.
Cuban holds 27 percent of the stake.
Cuban owned the Dallas Mavericks for 23 years, from 2000 until late 2023. In 2000, he bought the Mavericks for $285 million and sold the team for $3.5 billion.
Cuban is credited with helping the Mavericks improve from a struggling team to NBA champions in 2011 and one of the league’s more established and respected teams.
This trade has hit many in the Mavericks community, especially Cuban, to the core.
It is a trade that many don’t get and will possibly never get.
