Mary Trump Reveals Question She Asks Every Day Since Her Uncle Took Office

Mary Trump, an estranged niece and vocal critic of President Donald Trump, said in a blog post Thursday that she asks herself every day since her uncle took office, “What have we done?”

Mary Trump has been outspoken against the Republican politician for years, and in 2020, she published Too Much and Never Enough, a tell-all book about Donald Trump and his family. In it, she says he is “utterly incapable of leading this country and it’s dangerous to allow him to do so.”

After its release, Donald Trump called the book “disgraceful.” He told former Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that “she was not exactly a family favorite,” adding, “We didn’t have a lot of respect or like for her.”

Since taking office a month ago, Trump has departed from the Biden administration’s approach to the Ukraine-Russia war, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been a close U.S. ally, a “dictator,” on Wednesday. The shifting U.S. stance has raised concerns among some that Trump is more aligned with Putin than Zelensky.

Many Americans and policymakers across the political spectrum view Russia’s February 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine as an attack on Ukrainian sovereignty and believe Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to be reined in.

In her blog post, Mary Trump said she constantly asks herself, “What have we done?” in response to various actions, “new indignity[ies]” or “some horror” resulting from Trump administration policies and actions, whom she calls a “corrupt fascist regime.” Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

Mary Trump, along with several members who previously worked in Trump’s first administration, including former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and former Trump chief of staff John Kelly, have previously referred to Trump as a “fascist.” Trump denied the allegations on the campaign trail.

Her post criticized the Trump administration’s “increasingly hostile stance” to Ukraine, arguing that instead the administration is “aligned with the agenda of Vladimir Putin and Moscow.” Trump has falsely blamed Ukraine for starting the war, which is a Kremlin talking point, and has criticized Zelensky, who in response has asked the White House to stop relaying Russian disinformation.

Mary Trump also called out to the Biden administration for not doing enough to support Ukraine, saying, “I would argue that it is to our eternal shame that the United States under the Biden administration did not do nearly enough to make sure that this war against our ally perpetuated by our enemy ended as soon as humanly possible,” she wrote.

She noted that the “peace talks” to end the war, in which Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russia officials in Saudi Arabia, and not any Ukrainian officials, because of Trump, who she calls a “twisted and corrupt man” who “understands nothing and cares about nothing, will wreak whatever untold damage he is capable of unleashing all for the sake of enriching himself.”
