Mary Trump ‘Truly Shocked’ by Donald Trump
Mary Trump, Donald Trump’s estranged niece, took to social media on Friday to mock her uncle for being “too exhausted” to do interviews, saying she is “truly shocked.”
As the presidential race enters its final stretch, both campaigns are working to win over the remaining undecided voters. Vice President Kamala Harris’ team ramped up its media presence, investing heavily in digital and TV ads in key battleground states, appearing on Charlamagne tha God’s podcast to court Black voters and securing a rare solo interview on Fox News with Bret Baier.
Meanwhile, Trump had a media blitz, participating in interviews as he attended a pretaped women-only town hall with Fox host Harris Faulkner, followed by a Hispanic town hall on Univision.
But in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mary Trump, an outspoken critic of her uncle, mocked the former president over reports that he is too tired to do interviews.
“I am truly shocked that Donald is ‘too exhausted’ to do interviews. He eats so well and works out so frequently,” Mary Trump wrote.
In a separate post on X, Mary Trump reacted to a video of Trump during his campaign roundtable in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on Friday, in which journalist Aaron Rupar shared a moment when he seemingly “nods off.”
In response to the video, Mary Trump tweeted, “I’ll put $5 down on unconscious before closing statements. Who’s with me?”
Newsweek has reached out via email to Trump’s campaign for comment.
Mary Trump’s remarks come after Trump, who regularly appears on conservative cable shows and podcasts, recently pulled out of scheduled appearances on CBS’s 60 Minutes, as well as sit-downs with NBC in Philadelphia and CNBC’s Squawk Box.
Also, the Trump team was reportedly trying to arrange for the former president to be interviewed by the Shade Room, an Instagram-based company that has a large young Black audience.
An adviser to Trump told the Shade Room producers that an interview had not been scheduled because Trump was “exhausted and refusing [some] interviews, but that could change,” according to Politico’s Playbook.
However, Trump’s national press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has denied reports that he is turning down media interviews because he is exhausted, calling them “unequivocally false.”
“President Trump is running laps around Kamala Harris on the campaign trail,” Leavitt said. “And has done media interviews every day this week. He has more energy and a harder work ethic than anyone in politics.”
Harris and her campaign have used the exhaustion reports to suggest the 78-year-old GOP nominee cannot serve another term in office.
“Being president of the United States is probably one of the hardest jobs in the world,” Harris, who turns 60 on Sunday, said in Michigan. “And so we really do need to ask if he’s exhausted being on the campaign trail. Is he fit to do the job?”
In response, Trump told reporters on Friday that Harris was “a loser.”
“She doesn’t go to any events,” he said. “I’ve gone 48 days now without a rest. And I’ve got that loser who doesn’t have the energy of a rabbit. Tell me when you’ve seen me take even a little bit of a rest. I’m not even tired. I’m really exhilarated.”
