Matty Healy’s Mom Has Something to Say About Taylor Swift’s New Album
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Matty Healy’s mom, Denise Welch, addressed Taylor Swift’s latest album release during an appearance on the British talk show Loose Women on April 25.
When asked by host Nadia Sawalha about Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Welch humorously claimed ignorance of the album’s existence. “I wasn’t aware she had an album out at all,” she quipped, adding, “I haven’t heard anything about it. Anyway, I wish her all the best.”
The album, which was released on April 19, reportedly includes several tracks that fans suspect are directed at her son, particularly referencing their past brief romance. However, the 35 year old has maintained a distance from the controversy surrounding the alleged “diss” tracks.
Confronted by paparazzi on April 24, Healy responded in a similar manner to his mom, saying, “My diss track? Oh! I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good,” with a slight smile.

The light-hearted denial by both Healy and his mom seems to contrast sharply with the buzz among Swifties. Lyrics from the title track seemingly allude to Healy’s affection for typewriters, a detail that has not escaped the notice of listeners: “You left your typewriter at my apartment / Straight from the Tortured Poets Department / I think some things I never say / Like, ‘Who uses typewriters anyway?'”
Swifties are rampant on X (formerly Twitter) looking for clues referencing the 1975 front man in the new album. “Do we think she still has Matty Healy’s typewriter?” wrote one fan. “Are you trying to say Matty Healy is a tortured poet and he left a typewriter in your apartment? The lyrics are wild” said another.
Regardless of who the song is actually about, Healy is currently dating model Gabriette Bechtel, and Taylor has been enjoying her time with Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce. Welch emphasized that the “Somebody Else” singer is concentrating on his personal life at the moment, saying, “He’s very happy in his new relationship, I’m sure he’ll be focusing on that.”
