Mavericks Should Save Anthony Davis From Himself
The Dallas Mavericks could have the return of their superstar big man Anthony Davis sooner rather than later. NBA insider Marc Stein shared that the Mavericks could welcome back Davis in the midst of their upcoming four-game road trip.
Stein said Davis reportedly “is in increasingly strong contention to make his return to the floor during the Mavericks’ upcoming swing through the Eastern Conference.”
Stein also added that Davis is the closest of the two other big men to return to the court.
“The closest of the Mavericks’ injured veterans to being activated. Fellow sidelined big men Dereck Lively (right ankle) and Daniel Gafford (right knee) returned to 3-on-3 activities this week, while newly acquired swingman Caleb Martin has again been derailed by a right hip injury after appearing in five games.”
While the return of Davis is a delight to see for the Mavericks, it might not be the right move. With 11 games left in the season, they are not in an ideal situation.
Dallas may sit as the 10th seed in the loaded Western Conference. However, their odds of winning two single-elimination games and making the postseason are quite dire.
Davis’ talent alone will not be enough to get the job, and it may not be worth the risk. Not only are the Mavericks without Davis currently, but they have been without and will continue to be without their superstar guard Kyrie Irving.

Irving suffered a torn ACL earlier this month. On top of that, even if they were to get magically healthy from now till the end of the season, they would run into the No. 1 seed, Oklahoma City Thunder. That series would not go well for Dallas.
Although Davis wants to be on the court, it may not be best for his health or Dallas’ chances of landing a top pick in the draft. According to Tankathon, the Mavericks have the 12th-best odds of landing the No.1 pick.
Davis last played on Feb. 8, when he made his Mavericks debut against the Houston Rockets. Although he was limited to 31 minutes and three quarters in the game, he was spectacular.
In that contest, the former Lakers big man recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks.
Next season could be a different story for the Mavericks and Davis. However, for the next handful of weeks, it’s best to sit Davis and take their chances next season.
