Melissa McCarthy ‘Blacked Out’ After Breaking Her Nose On Stage

Melissa McCarthy has revealed she thought she was “blacking out” after breaking her nose on stage.

The Bridesmaids star, 54, injured herself while trying to make a balloon pop during a performance. She had been struggling to get it to burst and ended up “slamming” herself onto the floor face first, bashing her nose.

While there wasn’t any blood, the star felt a “weird liquid” on her face. Her husband, actor and comedian Ben Falcone, was there watching and said he “knew she was in danger” after the accident. So he got the crew to shut off the lights while things were sorted out.

The pair told the story on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, giggling about how McCarthy had been so determined to pop the balloon.

Falcone explained: “I was there in the back when she broke her nose on stage trying to make a balloon pop… she tried to pop it and the audience was going crazy because they saw that she couldn’t do it, they knew how bad she wanted to do it and so she would get more and more air… ‘Whoa bang!”

McCarthy chimed in: “I was holding it in front of my chest and I just started repeatedly slamming my chest down and I was now… 35, 36 37, I am diving on it and punching it.”

“And then finally I slammed myself down face first and it didn’t pop—my head bounced off the floor and I was like, ‘Oh I am blacking out’,” she said.

The Nine Perfect Strangers star said she wasn’t left bleeding but that there was “some kind of weird liquid” and that she didn’t know what it was.

“I thought it was blood so I thought, ‘Oh my God this is going to be scaring people’ but once I got to the mirror it was just all clear. But like, pouring… like a cup of it.”

“I was like, well, they are clapping but I am covered in blood!” she said.

The actress went to see a plastic surgeon to check whether she should have her nose reset, and revealed quite the response she got there.

She said: “He asked me how I did it and then he was just like, ‘Excuse me’ and he brought in two or three of his nurses and he’s like, ‘Will you explain what you did again?’ And I was like, ‘Well this just seems like it’s entertaining to you, this isn’t medical’ and he was like, ‘Oh it’s not medical at all!'”

Newsweek has emailed representatives for McCarthy for comment.
