Mets, Dylan Cease Trade Rumors Get New Life After Padres’ Latest Move
The New York Mets will start the season without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas in their starting rotation. With the rotation thinner than expected, the Mets could try to find a starter via trade.
Dylan Cease is rumored to be available, and the San Diego Padres latest move could hint at a trade coming soon. MLB insider Pat Ragazzo revealed the Padres are scouting the Mets, among other teams, as trade rumors surrounding Cease continue to circulate.
“According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the belief is that Cease is unlikely to be traded since the Padres view themselves as contenders in the National League,” wrote Ragazzo. “However, that hasn’t stopped San Diego from placing scouts on a number of teams’ spring training camps. Among the teams the Padres have been scouting due to Cease interest include: the Mets, Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and a team that has yet to be revealed in the Philadelphia Phillies, per league sources.”

Cease would be able to step in as the ace of the Mets staff and lead their rotation even after Manaea and Montas return. Cease is slated to be a free agent after the season and has made 30-plus starts in each of the last four seasons.
The Mets opted not to sign Jose Quintana and lost him to the Milwaukee Brewers. Had Quintana been re-signed the Mets may not have been forced to find a starter. The Mets rotation was already one of the weaker units on the team. Adding Cease could be a move that helps the Mets reach the World Series.
If Cease were acquired, a healthy Mets rotation would feature him, Manaea, Montas, Clay Holmes and Kodai Senga. However, if Cease is to be dealt, the Mets will have stiff competition in acquiring him.
