The New York Mets have an interesting offseason ahead of them after missing out on the postseason.
The Mets just missed out on the playoffs with an 83-79 record, but the 83-79 Cincinnati Reds made it over them. New York’s roster has a lot of question marks, including what the team will end up doing with star first baseman Pete Alonso, but another Mets star was involved in a surprise announcement.
Mets fan-favorite and five-time All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor surprisingly underwent minor elbow surgery, as shared by SNY’s Andy Martino.
“Mets superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor had a procedure in his right (throwing) elbow that a league source called a ‘minor cleanup’ shortly after the season,” Martino wrote Wednesday. “He is expected to be fully ready for spring training. Following the 2023 season, Lindor had surgery to remove bone spurs from the same elbow. He has developed a reputation on the Mets for playing through pain without complaint, including a fractured pinky toe this season.”
Lindor fighting through injuries is nothing new for the 31-year-old, who played 160 games with bone spurs in the 2023 season before undergoing surgery that offseason. It may be concerning that both surgeries have been on the same elbow.
The Mets may have had a disappointing season, but Lindor was named an All-Star again, slashing .267/.346/.466 while mashing 31 home runs with 86 RBIs. There’s likely to be some significant changes to the Mets’ roster this offseason, so the fact that Lindor is expected to be fully ready for spring training is promising. Halfway through a 10-year, $341 million contract, according to Spotrac, New York has a great core to build around in Lindor and Juan Soto.
