The New York Mets took some risks by bringing in Sean Manaea and Luis Severino last off-season. Both additions paid off, as this pair put together great individual seasons.
This offseason, the Mets replicated the risks by bringing in pitchers like Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to start games. While Holmes may be a breakout candidate, the rotation needs some work, largely due to some spring training injuries.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently predicted the Mets would swing a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals to bring in pitcher Sonny Gray before the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

“Gray Ends Season With: New York Mets,” Miller wrote. “St. Louis might need to retain a decent chunk of that 2026/2027 money to get a good return for Gray, but it sure is already looking like the Mets will be in the market for arms this summer.”
New York is likely going to need to add arms this season, whether it’s willing to admit it right now or not.
Pitchers like Sandy Alcantara, Dylan Cease, and Michael King may fit for the Mets, but they would be much more expensive than Gray.
Gray could be acquired for much less prospect capital while still pitching to the tune of a 3.24 ERA in 84 starts over the last three seasons.
The righty would be a very welcomed addition to the Mets’ starting rotation. He might not be the ace that Cease, King, or Alcantara would be, but it’s an upgrade the Mets can afford to make this season.
