Mets Top Prospect Off to Electric Start in Venezuelan Winter League

The offseason couldn’t be off to a better start for the New York Mets.
After acquiring Juan Soto in free agency, Mets prospect Luisangel Acuna is tearing it up in the Venezuelan Winter League. This comes after Acuna made his debut on Sept. 14 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Acuna is playing a variety of positions this winter, covering both ends of the middle infield while also manning centerfield. Offensively, he has an average over .330 with three home runs, 17 RBI and 18 stolen bases.
While the home run number isn’t as high as the Mets would want, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. owns a .914 OPS. This means he is consistently getting on base and racking up extra-base hits.
Acuna is currently the 12th-ranked prospect in the Mets system per MLB.com.
In 14 games after being called up, Acuna hit .308 and recorded an OPS of .966 as he helped push the Mets into the postseason, where they reached the National League Championship Series.
Whether Acuna is playing in the infield or in the outfield next to Soto, the Mets are relying on him to be a big piece of the team in 2025 and beyond. His ability to get on base and his speed are elements the team will look to see more of in the near future.
The Mets acquired Acuna in July 2023 as part of the trade that sent Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers. Scherzer pitched in Game 3 of the World Series and helped lead the Rangers to their first-ever World Series title.
