Mets Would Land Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Blockbuster 5-Player Trade Prediction

While the New York Mets have made several roster acquisitions in hopes of returning to the postseason in 2025, there’s still a question mark at first base since Pete Alonso remains unsigned. Could president of baseball operations David Stearns make a bold move for Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr.?

While Guerrero’s name has been churning through the trade rumor mill this winter, a trade before the season starts seems unlikely. Even if the right-handed hitter doesn’t agree to a long-term extension with the Jays before the start of spring training, they’ll likely continue trying to compete in 2025 after signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal.

But things can change quickly, especially if extension talks break down. As long as Guerrero’s long-term future remains uncertain, the possibility of a team like the Mets swooping in to make a trade remains. FanSided’s Jacob Mountz proposed the following “realistic” swap between both squads:

• Mets receive: first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
• Blue Jays receive: infielder Mark Vientos, shortstop Jett Williams, infielder Ronny Mauricio and outfielder Starling Marte

“A player of Guerrero’s caliber is never cheap, and the demands from the Blue Jays are more than what is deemed feasible for most teams given that Guerrero is a one-year rental who hasn’t been consistent throughout his career,” Mountz wrote. “But if the Mets are going to land a new star to play first base, a package is going to need to look something like this.”

While Marte’s inclusion would be more of a salary dump, the other three would be significant additions for Toronto. Vientos is fresh off a breakout campaign in 2024, while Williams (second) and Mauricio (sixth) are two of New York’s top-10 prospects, according to MLB.com.

This hypothetical trade would only guarantee the Mets one year of Guerrero. He’s due to earn $28.5 million in 2025 and is scheduled to reach free agency next winter. Spotrac projects his market value at 12 years and $427 million.
