Michael Vick Dismisses Rumors of Virginia Tech Coaching Reunion

On Sunday, the Virginia Tech Hokies made the decision to fire head coach Brent Pry after the team’s Week 3 loss to Old Dominion. And while it’s unclear who will ultimately be the man who ends up being his long-term replacement, one former legend at the program, Michael Vick, quickly became a popular name rumored to be in the mix for the vacancy.

Vick is in the midst of his first season as a head coach at the FCS program Norfolk State, which hasn’t exactly gone to plan thus far, sitting at 1-2 on the year.

Given his lack of experience, it seemed fairly obvious that Vick isn’t exactly ready for a high-profile head coaching job like the vacant Virginia Tech job would ultimately be for him. But still, there were a significant amount of rumors that emerged suggesting that Vick would be a natural fit given his history in Blacksburg.

When asked about the rumors on Tuesday, Vick made it incredibly clear that his focus at the moment is on making Norfolk State the best team it can possibly be.

“My primary focus right now is Norfolk State,” said Vick. “That’s all we can focus on. We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now.”

Even if Vick is perhaps hiding some of his interest in the Virginia Tech vacancy with these comments here, it doesn’t seem all that likely that what he brings to the table aligns with what Virginia Tech wants in a new head coach at the moment.

According to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, Virginia Tech reportedly wants a coaching candidate who is “a proven head coach with NIL + portal experience”.

Currently, given Vick’s inexperience and lack of success thus far at Norfolk State, Vick brings none of those things to the table as a head coach.

Maybe in the future, when Vick gets more experience, he will be a true candidate to potentially return to his alma mater. But for the time being, Vick will do his very best to get Norfolk State’s season turned around.
