Michigan, Kalen DeBoer Rumors Receive Another Big Update

Since the Michigan Wolverines’ coaching job became available, there have been constant rumors and rumblings regarding Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer being a top-tier candidate for the job.

While the rumors have been out there, DeBoer recently spoke out to squash the rumors and make it clear that he’s committed to Alabama and remaining the head coach in Tuscaloosa for the foreseeable future.

“Haven’t talked with anyone, no plans of talking with anyone,” DeBoer said clearly.

Those comments were meant to put the rumors connecting him to Michigan to bed. However, that has not been the case.

Kalen DeBoer, Alabama, Michigan

Once again, DeBoer’s name has been brought up in connection with the Wolverines. This time, it’s a college football insider who is suggesting that the door may not be fully closed on him leaving the Crimson Tide to head up to Michigan.

During an episode of the “Bear Bets” podcast, Fox Sports college football reporter Bruce Feldman chimed in with his thoughts on the matter.

“What I’ve heard is that [DeBoer] does like it at Alabama and I know the AD (athletic director Greg Byrne) really likes him and the leadership likes him and thinks he’s the guy they want to lead the program,” Feldman said. “But if they lose, man, I wonder if that changes the calculus for a lot of people — including DeBoer.”

Feldman continued forward, revealing just how serious the Wolverines are about hiring DeBoer if they get the chance.

“There’s serious interest, from what I’ve been told, at Michigan for DeBoer. He’s really a good offensive coach and they at Michigan have been dreadful on offense. They were horrible last year and weren’t that much better this year. I think that’s something they’ll look at.”

Michigan having interest in DeBoer is no surprise. He’s a great head coach and the Wolverines would love to have someone like him leading the program. Leaving Alabama would be a tough sell for DeBoer.

A loss against the Oklahoma Sooners in the opening round of the College Football Playoff could stir up the rumor mill. However, DeBoer is just wrapping up his second season as the lead man of the Crimson Tide.

No one can ever say never. DeBoer could change is mind and Alabama might not be thrilled with a first-round loss in the playoff. It would still be a complete surprise to see him wind up as the next head coach at Michigan.
