MLB Insider Reveals Idea Of New ‘Mystery Team’ In $650 Million Juan Soto Sweepstakes
The Juan Soto sweepstakes is taking over baseball and it appears as though the list of teams with the possibility to acquire him is dwindling.
The top two teams in the running have long been assumed to be the two New York powerhouses: the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. These two teams had successful meetings with the free agent superstar this week. Two more American League East teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, also had successful meetings with Soto.
The Los Angeles Dodgers emerged as a sleeper team recently, especially after the news broke they would be meeting with Soto over the next few days as well.
But MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has revealed the presence of a “Good ol’ mystery club” in the Soto sweepstakes, where he even revealed a few potential teams it could be.
“One source said Soto had spoken with at least one other team besides those that have been reported, thrusting the good ol’ mystery club into the equation,” Feinsand wrote. “According to sources, other teams that could meet with Soto include the (San Francisco) Giants, (Philadelphia) Phillies and (Tampa Bay Rays) Rays. Tampa Bay would appear to be a long shot, particularly now that the club will be playing home games in 2025 at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., following the damage to the Tropicana Field roof sustained last month during Hurricane Milton.”
The idea of a mystery team is fun to follow and fun to think about, but the Soto sweepstakes will likely take place between one of the top five teams that have already met with him.
Keep an eye out for who the mystery team ends up being. If they’re willing to offer opt outs or insane amounts of deferred money, this mystery team could shock a lot of people (myself included) in the Soto sweepstakes.
