MLB News: Fan Carted Off Field After Scary Fall From Stands

The game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs was delayed Wednesday when a fan fell from the stands at PNC Park and left the field on a cart.

The fan fell onto the warning track in right field during the seventh inning of the game.

The game resumed after the delay, and the Pirates beat the Cubs 4-3.

The Pirates subsequently released a statement about the incident.

“Tonight, during the seventh inning of the game at PNC Park, an adult male fell from the right field bleachers onto the field of play,” the statement read. “Pittsburgh EMS, as well as the Pirates and Cubs athletic training teams and other PNC Park personnel reacted and responded immediately and administered care. He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. No further information is available at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

The ball was live on the field when the unidentified fan stood up along with others in his section of seats, and fell to the field from the “Roberto Clemente Wall,” which stands 21 feet above the warning track.

Players and coaches from both teams instantly demanded for the game to stop. After Andrew McCutchen reached second base with a double, the game paused while the fan was removed from the field.

Players from both teams could be seen praying, according to the Associated Press, and McCutchen held a cross that hung from his neck while the fan was taken off the field.

“Truly hate what happened tonight,” McCutchen posted on Twitter/X after the game. “Can’t help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru. May God Bless you all. Good night 🙏🏾”

Porter Hodge replaced Caleb Thielbar as the Cubs’ pitcher after the game resumed.

Hodge walked Joey Bart, and threw a wild pitch that allowed McCutchen to reach third base, but the pitcher struck out Ke’Bryan Hayes to end the Pirates’ rally.

Both the Pirates and the Cubs were retired in order in the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar pitched around a single by Dansby Swanson to close the door on the victory.

But the health of the fan who fell on the field was foremost on the minds of those who witnessed the scary incident, even as the Pirates came away with a big win over a division rival.
