MLB News: Three Names Emerge in AL Managerial Search: Report

The Chicago White Sox are reportedly looking far and wide for a permanent replacement for interim manager Grady Sizemore after a record 121-loss regular season.
The good news for Sizemore’s successor: there’s nowhere to go but up.
The bad news: it could be a while before the White Sox are “up.”
The Southsiders set a modern-era MLB record by going 41-121, a finish that required an unexpected 5-1 surge at the finish line. Who is willing to clean things up?
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, general manager Chris Getz has his eyes set on prospective managers with or without big league experience.
“Former Angels manager Phil Nevin and Cardinals bench coach Daniel Descalso are among a long list of White Sox managerial targets,” Heyman wrote. “One big target is Rangers bench coach Will Venable, the seeming heir apparent in Texas who turned down the Mets.”
The grind of a 162-game season is enough to eliminate many qualified candidates from even the best managerial jobs. In 2005, for example, Bud Black declined to interview for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ manager job for family reasons; 10 years later, he interviewed for the same post and was among the runners-up to Dave Roberts.

Of the three candidates Heyman mentioned, only Nevin has major league managing experience. He skippered the Angels from 2022-23, going 119-149 after taking over for Joe Maddon.

A Southern California native, his playing and coaching career has taken him around the country, including stops with the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees before he joined the Angels’ staff under Maddon in 2020. Venable, 41, could be inclined to bide his time with the Rangers until Bochy, 69, is ready to retire. Texas won the World Series two years ago, the first year with Bochy and Venable on the bench, before slumping to a 78-84 finish this year.
Descalso, 37, was named the Cardinals’ bench coach prior to the 2024 season. He appeared in the World Series twice as a player in St. Louis during a 10-year playing career that also included stops with Colorado (2015-16), Arizona (2017-18), and the Chicago Cubs (2019).

The White Sox appointed Sizemore to replace Pedro Grifol when the latter was fired on Aug. 8. They were 28-89 before the change and 13-33 afterward.
The all-time record for most losses in an MLB season is held by the Cleveland Spiders, who finished 20–134 in 1898.
