MLB Playoffs: ALCS Game 1 Starter Out With Season-Ending Injury
The story of Alex Cobb’s career has always come with a caveat: he’s a good pitcher when he’s healthy.
That was the case in 2024, when the veteran right-hander made three starts and allowed only five earned runs across 16.1 innings. He was a worthy choice to start Game 1 of the American League Championship Series for the Cleveland Guardians on Monday.
It did not go well.
Cobb didn’t make it out of the third inning in the New York Yankees’ 5-2 win over Cleveland. He allowed three runs in 2.2 innings and was saddled with the loss.
Tuesday, Cobb was removed from the Guardians’ roster with an injury and replaced by pitcher Ben Lively. According to MLB, Medical Director Dr. Gary Green confirmed the injury after a full review of the medical information.
As a result of the roster substitution, Cobb cannot pitch in the remainder of this series or the next round should the Guardians advance to the World Series. In effect, his season is over.
That means the Yankees won’t have another chance to face Cobb, their longtime AL East nemesis from his time in Tampa Bay (2011-17) and Baltimore (2018-20).
The 38-year-old right-hander missed most of the season due to hip surgery, a fractured nail on his right hand, and a blister on his right middle finger.
More to come on this story from Newsweek Sports.
