MLB Playoffs: Wild Card Round Produces Huge Upset
The Detroit Tigers were sellers at the July 30 trade deadline. They were a .500 team as recently as Sept. 6. They were 10 games out of a playoff spot on Aug. 10, and snuck into the playoffs on the final weekend of the regular season.
Two games into the postseason, they’re moving onto the next round.
The Tigers beat the Houston Astros, 5-2 on Wednesday, sweeping the favored team out of their home field in a monumental upset.
Detroit used a masterful start from ace Tarik Skubal to win 3-1 at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they used a bullpen game, using seven different pitchers and seven hits to beat Houston in their own park.
The Astros had been to the American League Championship Series seven consecutive years. The 2024 ALCS will be the first to feature two teams other than the Astros since 2016.
