Momma Cat Passes Away Suddenly, Hearts Break Over What Her Kitten Does Next

The heartbreaking sight of a kitten laying on its mother’s body after she passed away suddenly has left social media users sobbing.

Cat owner and TikTok user @ai.yue3 shared the devastating clip showing the kitten, who is yet to be named, laying on top of the body of its late mom, Yohane. In June, Yohane welcomed three kittens, but then tragically suffered a sudden heart attack in August.

Yohane’s body was wrapped in blankets before she was due to be buried. However, 19-year-old @ai.yue3 told Newsweek that her kitten lay on the body “for almost 30 minutes” before being laid to rest.

“I felt sad because I lost my cat, but I was even sadder for the kitten who had lost its mother,” @ai.yue3 said. “The kitten is doing OK now. I’ve been giving them milk to replace the mom’s milk, but I’m also feeding them dry food now that they’re old enough.”

The owner, from the Philippines, shared the heartbreaking footage on TikTok, and it instantly went viral. In just a matter of days, the video has generated over 3.8 million views and more than 875,500 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

Needless to say, social media users were crushed by the sight of the grieving kitten. Thankfully, their owner is doing everything she can to help them mourn and feel comfortable.

Just like humans, cats are indeed capable of feeling a range of emotions, including grief.

VCA Animal Hospitals suggests that when a cat is mourning, they will typically become depressed and listless, have a decreased appetite, decline to play, and may sleep more than usual. It’s also common for a cat to choose to be alone when they’re grieving and they may hide away, such as under the bed.

While @ai.yue3 certainly wasn’t expecting the video to go viral, she’s been blown away by all the responses in recent days. Many internet users were concerned for the kitten’s safety and wellbeing, however @ai.yue3 explained that all three kittens are healthy and since their mom died of a heart attack, they’re not at risk of catching anything.

“I’m not popular on TikTok so I really wasn’t expecting the video to generate so much engagement,” @ai.yue3 said. “But I can say that reaching a lot of people can also lead to a lot of negative comments too.

She continued: “I am a fur parent who just lost her cat, and people are bashing me for being a careless owner. I love my cats so much and I’m willing to do anything for them. So, I hope people learn how to be sensitive, especially if you just lost a cat you loved so dearly.”

With over 12,600 comments on the video so far, plenty of social media users shared their reactions to the gut-wrenching clip.

One comment reads: “That poor baby just wants his mum back.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “grief of losing a mum is universal. I wish I could hug her and tell her it’s going to be OK.”

While another person added: “thank you for letting this baby say goodbye to her momma.”
