Muffin recall update as FDA issues highest risk warning

The FDA has issued an update to their muffin recall from February, which labels them with the highest risk classification for a recall.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recalled Six Count Raisin Bran Muffins produced by JE Bakery 2019 LLC, which were pulled from shelves on February 12, as a Class I recall, meaning exposure to the muffins could lead to “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability…[of] serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The muffins were voluntarily taken out of markets by JE Bakery 2019 LLC, whose products sell in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Why It Matters

The muffins were given the FDA’s Class I designation because they were mislabeled. The muffins were labelled as Six Count Bran Muffins but were actually Glorious Morning Muffins, which include walnuts, an ingredient in the muffins, and a known allergen.

Although no illnesses have been reported, the recall highlights ongoing challenges in food labeling and allergen safety.

Walnuts are a tree nut and are one of the FDA’s “Big Nine” food allergens, along with eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, wheat and soybeans. Millions of Americans are impacted by food allergies or sensitivities, and consuming an allergen could lead to life-threatening allergic reactions in some people.

What to Know

JE Bakery 2019 LLC discovered the issue when a retail location identified the mislabeling error. In response, the company notified affected retailers, who have since removed the product from shelves.

The affected products, weighing 12 ounces, were distributed in Minnesota and Wisconsin under the store brands Cub Foods, Jerry’s Foods, and County Market. The mislabeled packages were labeled with a Sell By date of February 18, 2025, and UPC 0 29341-00233 7.

These muffins were one of six other undeclared allergen recalls in February. On February 15, Mauna Loa Milk Chocolate Covered Macadamias were recalled for undeclared almonds. On February 19, Berry Buddies, Berries & Pancakes bento box snack packs were recalled for undeclared wheat and eggs. On February 20, Las Ollas Botana Mix Snacks and Delights 2 lb packages were recalled for undeclared wheat, sesame, soy, and yellow 5, yellow 6, red 6. On the same day, snack rolls, biscuits, and wafers from Ulker were recalled for undeclared wheat, eggs, and milk. And on February 21, Dark Chocolate Conettos from Glicks were recalled for undeclared milk.

What Happens Next

The muffins had a sell-by date of February 18, but if any customers still have them at home they are urged not to eat them, and to return them to the store for a refund.
