NASCAR Cup Series Driver Hit with Shocking Disqualification at Martinsville
Following the eventful Cook Out 400 at Martinsville, Erik Jones was disqualified by NASCAR for failing to meet the minimum weight requirement laid out in the regulations. Jones had secured a P24 Cup Series race finish.
Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports reported that Jones was the only driver to be penalized since all other cars “in tech were good.”

Jones holds an impressive tally of 298 Cup series races and is currently racing his ninth season, making him a well-established NASCAR veteran. He has finished 90 races in the top ten positions but only secured three wins. His last win was in 2022 in the Cook Out Southern 500.

With a best position of 12th this year at the Daytona 500, Jones must up the ante to finish races in the top ten. He signed a multiyear contract extension with Legacy Motor Club in August last year and revealed he was entering the best period of his career. He said in a statement:
“I’m looking forward to what we can build at Legacy Motor Club. I’ve been with the No. 43 car for a handful of years and feel like I’m coming into some of the best years of my career. I am hoping to grow alongside Legacy MC in the seasons to come.”
CEO of Legacy Motor Club, Cal Wells III said:
“Erik Jones has been the consistent cornerstone of Legacy Motor Club’s driver lineup since Maury chose to enter NASCAR’s highly competitive Cup Division. He’s a proven champion that, surrounded with the right team powered by Toyota, can and will compete for race wins against the very best on any given Sunday. Having personally known Erik for close to 14 years, I feel blessed he’s chosen to remain with the Club and I’m looking forward to winning races with him at the helm of the iconic No. 43.”
Co-owner of the team, Jimmie Johnson added:
“Erik is one of the most talented drivers in NASCAR, I’ve had the chance to race against him and have had a chance to watch him drive for other teams and the CLUB. I admire his talent and am glad we will have him race for us for the upcoming years. Erik will be a key to helping us turn our program around and we look forward to giving him the tools he needs to go out on Sundays and race for wins and eventually a championship someday.”
At Martinsville, Denny Hamlin ended his winless streak from April 2024, winning by a margin of over three seconds.
