Netanyahu Makes Israel First Nation in the World to Recognize Somaliland
Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state, more than three decades after the territory severed ties with Somalia. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar signed the declaration for Israel, while Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed on behalf of his government.
Netanyahu, speaking by phone with Abdullahi, called the step historic and said the two sides would pursue cooperation in economic development, agriculture and social programs. The recognition follows longstanding informal ties and comes amid broader regional diplomacy involving Israel and the Horn of Africa.
