New Jersey School Bus Crash: Everything We Know
A school bus was involved in a crash on Monday night, leading to 13 people being transported to the hospital.
Newsweek reached out to the New Jersey State Police via email Monday night for comment.
Why It Matters
The crash led to multiple hospitalizations and shut down lanes of traffic on the Garden State Parkway Monday night.
What To Know
Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali said the bus was heading to New York on the Garden State Parkway near mile marker 170.9. He added that the parkway’s lanes were closed.
“THANKFULY [sic] NO FATALITIES REPORTED,” Ghassali wrote in a Facebook update around 9 p.m. ET. “MOST SERIOUS INJURY NOW HAS A PULSE.
31 TOTAL OCCUPANTS ON THE BUS HEADING TO NEW YORK, 13 TRANSPORTED TO LOCAL HOSPITALS.”
According to CBS’ New York affiliate, the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Police and fire rescue vehicles were at the scene, shown in Ghassali’s posts on Facebook. The bus also appeared to be flipped onto its side along the highway.

What People Are Saying
Democratic Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey said on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday: “I’ve been briefed on a crash on the Garden State Parkway earlier tonight near the James Gandolfini Service Area involving an overturned school bus from Lakewood. @NJSP and @NewJerseyDOT are currently on the scene. An investigation is ongoing.”
Ghassali said, according to CBS New York: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all first responders and the neighboring towns’ first responders for their swift assistance. Special thanks to Rockland Hatzoloh Ambulance Service for arriving on the scene to help.”
What Happens Next
The cause of the crash and conditions of the 13 transported occupants were immediately unknown to Newsweek. Ghassali says the New Jersey State Police is overseeing the investigation.
