Nick Saban Takes Massive Shot at Former NFL HC Pete Carroll
Former Alabama head coach turned analyst Nick Saban is having the time of his life with ESPN’s College GameDay. Whether it’s changing his tie to appease Cal football fans or cracking jokes with Cal legend and NFL All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch.
On Saturday, the ESPN College Football GameDay crew was at Cal Berkeley, and as always, the show was jam-packed. Berkeley was full of fun and a jubilant time, and Saban, usually stoic, was quite the opposite this morning.
Lynch was a guest picker for College GameDay, and he and Saban decided to have some fun. The Golden Bear legend was in an appearance for the Cal vs. Miami to make picks for today’s slate of matchups.
The 72-year-old coach teased Lynch about the Seahawks’ pass on the 1-yard line in Super Bowl 49. Saban had a little fin at Lynch’s expense with the infamous decision of former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll to pass the ball instead of running it with Lynch.
“Marshawn, we may disagree on our pick today, but I’m telling you man, fourth-and-1 in the Super Bowl at the one, I’m giving your ass the ball,” Saban told Lynch on the “College GameDay” set, per ESPN.
As we all know, that pass play on the 1-yard line led to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots winning due to Malcolm Butler’s interception. That play is now one of the most influential plays in NFL Super Bowl history.
Lynch recently shared his opinion on the play in an appearance on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast.
“To be honest, I looked at nine of the other guys, and they looked at me, like, what the f— just happened?” Lynch said, recalling Wilson relaying the coaches’ decision to pass the ball from the 1-yard line, trailing 28-24, with 26 seconds left. “Man, the look on all my teammates’ faces in the huddle, it spoke volumes. … By the time it (set) in, (I’m thinking), ‘What the (f-word) did he just call?’ You just hear all the cheering from the other sideline.”
That play will forever be linked to Lynch and go down in infamy.
Nonetheless, we’re approaching the 10th anniversary soon, but it’s nice to know that Lybch can joke about it. It’s been funnier, considering Saban is throwing a jab at that play and Carroll.
