The Boston Red Sox have made a few moves to upgrade their roster this offseason, but they haven’t done enough to put themselves on the same tier as the New York Yankees.
The Red Sox are still reportedly involved in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes, but if they miss out on him, where will they turn?
Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report cited a report by Jon Morosi which indicated the Red Sox were discussing a potential Nolan Arenado trade with the St. Louis Cardinals again. These two teams were reportedly connected on a potential Arenado deal earlier this offseason.

“With the Cardinals steering a different course after failing to reach the postseason in the past two years—veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt already departed this winter, signing with the New York Yankees—an Arenado trade has felt likely,” Rapp wrote. “Arenado wants to play for a contender, and the Cardinals want to cut payroll and open pathways for younger players as they rebuild. A divorce seems to be the best option for both sides, though it’s hardly guaranteed.
“As for the Red Sox, the team has been busy this offseason, most notably adding starting pitcher Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. The focus, to this point, has clearly been rebuilding the pitching staff. But adding another right-handed bat and solid defensive infielder like Arenado would make sense.”
Would it even make sense for the Red Sox to pursue Arenado?
The short answer is yes, but there’s a catch.
Boston shouldn’t give up any top prospects to bring the veteran third baseman in. If the Red Sox are going to pursue a trade for the Gold Glove star, they should only move one or two prospects ranked in the back half of their top 30.
If they can’t land Arenado for that, they should stick with what they have.
