NYT ‘Connections’ August 13: Answers and Clues for Game #429

If you’ve never played it before, Connections is a daily word game from The New York Times that has become a huge hit since it was published online in June 2023.

The puzzle has tens of millions of users worldwide and, in its first year, 55.2 million people finished a game with zero mistakes.

The answers for Tuesday’s Connections will be revealed at the end of this article, so please scroll down with caution if you want to work them out yourself.

How to Play ‘Connections’

Each day, Connections players are presented with a new 16-word puzzle, which they are tasked with dividing into four categories based around common characteristics.

These groups are color-coded by difficulty level: yellow (easiest), green, blue, and purple (hardest). When you correctly identify a group, those words will be highlighted and removed from the grid. The corresponding color will reveal how challenging the group was intended to be.

The uniting themes can come from a broad range of categories—anything from types of plants to movie franchises. If a player guesses incorrect groups of words four times, the game ends, and they are defeated.

Players can shuffle and rearrange the board if they want to try to make the process of guessing the connections easier. To make things a bit tougher, a word can sometimes belong to more than one category—but there is only one correct answer.

According to Connections editor Wyna Liu, if you have five cards that all seem to belong in the same category, your best move may well be to try to figure out a different category, then come back to the original one once some of the words are eliminated.

Liu said: “Doing so might take one of those extra cards out of contention, or at least remove a few cards from the board, making other categories easier to see.”
