Ohio Mass Shooting: ‘Multiple Victims’ at New Albany Warehouse

At least one person died and five hospitalized in a mass shooting at a cosmetics warehouse in New Albany, Ohio, late Tuesday.

Police believe the shooting at KDC/One in Smiths Mill Road North shortly before 11:00 p.m. was a “targeted attack.”

A suspect has been identified but remains at large, city officials said about 3 hours later.

What to Know

New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones told reporters on Wednesday that it was not yet clear whether the suspect was an employee and officers do not yet know a motive.

About 150 people were evacuated from the building, but police did not believe there was an ongoing threat to anyone in the vicinity, he added.

“We believe we may know their location, we don’t have any reason to believe that they are a general threat to society,” Jones said, “This appears at this point to be a targeted attack.”

Officials have yet to provide an update on those taken to hospital.

Newsweek contacted New Albany Police Department for comment via email.

Cars were seen lined up, waiting for authorities to allow them to leave the area which was placed on locked for a time, broadcaster WBNS 10TV reported.

A local reporter on the scene estimated that between two and three dozen law enforcement vehicles were near one side of the building.

This deadly shooting is the 26th mass shooting in America this year, according to nonprofit trackers Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot, excluding the perpetrator.

What People Are Saying

New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones said: “This has been a very tragic situation – our thoughts go out to the victims the families and everyone that works at this facility. This is something that we hoped that would never happen in our community, but we prepared for it, and this is where we are now.”

Speaking about the suspect, he said: “We have a person of interest and we are working to locate them and bring them into custody.”

“Again, this is quite a tragedy,” he added.

What Happens Next

Authorities are still trying to bring the suspect into custody.

Jones said: “It’s really a fluid situation and the investigation’s just begun.”
