Olympic Medal Count Day 8: Brazil Dances, Canada Still Searching For Gold
Look away, Canada.
It’s not pretty.
We are now officially over a week into the Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy, and one of the best winter sports nations on the planet has not won a gold medal yet.
15 countries have won gold medals, including Brazil and Kazakhstan, but not Canada.
The biggest news of Saturday came from one of those surprise nations with a gold medal: Lucas Pinheiro of Brazil.
Not only did Pinheiro win his country its first gold of the event in the men’s giant slalom, but he won Brazil’s first-ever medal at the Winter Olympics.
He won the first-ever medal for any country in South America at the Winter Olympics.
Norway continued its cross-country skiing dominance by winning the women’s 4 x 7.5km relay. The Norwegians lead all countries in the medal count after eight days, with 10 golds (1st) and 20 overall (also 1st).
Team USA got a big scare in men’s hockey early with the underdog Denmark taking a 2-1 lead following a shot from the middle of the rink. But the Americans stabilized after the first period and cruised after a flurry of goals in the second, winning 6-3 with their final group game against Germany on Sunday.

Home country Italy has done more than be respectable so far and has exceeded expectations, currently sitting second in the total medals standings with 18, along with the second-most golds with six.
The USA is not far behind Italy with 17 medals and five golds.
For Canada, though, it’s been a frustrating Olympics so far, to say the least. Although they sit in ninth place overall with eight medals, they are still trying to find that first gold medal to get them going, with little over a week to go before the Games close.
