Olympics Controversy Erupts With Arena Blamed for Goal Against Team USA

In sports, some plays are considered impossible for a regular pedestrian to accomplish.

Hitting a baseball from a flamethrower pitcher.

Dunking a basketball over an NBA center.

Surviving a single play in the NFL without getting permanently injured.

Saving a high-speed puck as a hockey goalie.

On Saturday at the Winter Olympic Games, Team USA’s Jeremy Swayman couldn’t agree more after giving up one of the weirdest goals in recent memory.

In a game where the Americans were heavy favorites against Denmark, the Boston Bruins netminder let in a goal from center ice from Nicholas Jensen.

A play that has happened millions of times before against Swayman, where the Bruin goalie would handle easily, this time got by him and into the net.

Was it the pressure of the moment?

Was he rusty from all the travel?

Or were the Olympics themselves to blame?

Following the goal, video and images began emerging from the sight line Swayman had for the shot on net.

While the NHL has white boards to make the black puck clear to spectators and players, that’s not the case in Milan. The boards in the venue for the game were dark, almost the same color as the puck that was put on target by Jensen.

The Olympics have already been under fire for their decisions on venues for this event, with figure skating and speed skating fans annoyed by the ice quality that has seen some of their best athletes fall in the biggest moments of their lives.

American hockey fans didn’t hold back their anger after the midrink shocker.

The goal gave Denmark a 2-1 lead in the first period.

We will keep you updated as the game continues and the story develops in Milan.
