Orioles Utility Man Reportedly Out 8-12 Weeks With Hamstring Strain

The Baltimore Orioles’ season has not gone nearly as expected, including the firing of manager Brandon Hyde on May 17, but the team is not ready to throw in the towel just yet, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Orioles’ plans to claw back into the wild card race took a hit Tuesday with the announcement that utility man Jorge Mateo will miss eight to 12 weeks with a hamstring strain, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.

Mateo was hitting .180 this season in 31 games played with just one home run, but his versatility off the bench is the key factor that will be missing in the Orioles’ dugout. Mateo has lined up at every position on the infield and outfield besides first base and right field for the Orioles this season.
While Mateo’s bat has not been anything special for the Orioles this year, he has been able to give the Orioles the ability to make decisions late in games with his defensive flexibility. The Orioles are hoping to get back on the right track and force their way back into the playoff race, and now they will have one less move they can pull to gain the advantage late in games.
Hamstring strains can be tricky upon return, and one setback could end Mateo’s season.
Mateo is already on the 10-day injured list, and according to MLB Trade Rumors, the Orioles plan to move Mateo to the 60-day injured list when the club needs his 40-man roster spot.
