The NFL free agency period is always packed with random happenings, and this year was no exception, with plenty of deals being made between the teams in the league.
One of those moves came between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. During the NFL offseason, these franchises put together a deal with the Cowboys receiving edge Rashan Gary and the Packers getting a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Here’s what the NFL analysts and experts have to say about this particular deal.
In a Tuesday, March 17 feature for CBS Sports, Jordan Dajani discusses the NFL’s offseason deals and trades. “This NFL offseason has already been a wild one, as we witnessed an uptick in trades during free agency,” he states in the piece. “Certain teams were looking to shed salary in order to get under the set cap number, while other teams were looking to buy talent ahead of the free agency firestorm.
Regarding for this deal, he notes that the trade grades, via Jared Dubin, are a C+ for the Steelers and A- for the Packers. So, Dubin truly believes this is a better deal for the Packers, and here’s why.
“After a weird Friday, which included Rashan Gary claiming his social media had been hacked, the Packers are finally parting ways with the pass rusher,” Dajani notes in the piece. “Instead of releasing him, Green Bay found a trade partner in the Cowboys, who are sending a future fourth-rounder for the 28-year-old.”

So, with this new move, Gary is back with defensive tackle Kenny Clark and defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who served as Green Bay’s defensive quality control coach when Gary was having his rookie season with the team.

“Gary has base salaries of $18 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027, but none of that money is guaranteed, according to Over the Cap,” Dajani adds. “Gary has recorded at least 7.5 sacks in each of the last three years, but is still searching for that first double-digit sack season.”
So, the voices at CBS Sports truly believe this is a stronger deal for the Green Bay Packers, but time will tell.
