Packers vs Eagles Expert Predictions for NFL’s First Ever Game in Brazil

The 2024 NFL season started off with a bang last night as the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly beat the Baltimore Ravens, 27-20.

The Ravens scored the potential game-tying touchdown with zero seconds on the clock. However, upon further review, tight end Isaiah Likely’s toe was just out of bounds, giving the Chiefs the win.

Normally, NFL fans would have to wait until Sunday to get more football in Week 1. However, this year, the league is doing things a little differently.

The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles are playing on Friday night in São Paulo, Brazil. It’s the first-ever NFL game in South America, and the first NFL opening weekend game to be played on a Friday night in over 50 years.

With all the history and excitement on Friday night, NFL fans should be in for a treat. Here’s how the Newsweek Sports staff expects things to shake out.

Matt Levine: The first NFL game in Brazil will have some fireworks to it. Both the Packers and Eagles can put up points, but it’ll be a matter of who can get a timely stop. For this game, Green Bay gets the big stop and inches out a season-opening victory. New safety Xavier McKinney plays the hero with a clutch turnover late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Prediction: Packers 34, Eagles 30

Alex Kirschenbaum: Look for Jalen Hurts to rally back from a disappointing finish to his 2023 season. Yes, he notched career-bests in passing and rushing touchdowns while earning his second straight Pro Bowl berth, but he also had less fortunate career highs in interceptions and lost fumbles. Pacers quarterback Jordan Love, meanwhile, had a breakout run last year, including a charmed playoffs. But with opposing defenses now ready for him, can the Utah State product have the same impact?

Prediction: Eagles 20, Packers 10

Ricardo Sandoval: Two of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL will battle in Brazil for the first time ever. The Eagles are coming off a disastrous second half of the 2023 season but will look to turn the script around with a new offensive and defensive coordinator. As for the Packers, they are coming off a remarkable second half of the season and they would like to take the next leap in 2024. This matchup could be a playoff preview, but in early September, I’m going to go with the young up-and-coming Packers to set the tone for the rest of the season.

Prediction: Packers 33, Eagles 30

Noah Camras: This game has all the makings of a classic, and both high-powered offenses will be ready to put on a show for the Brazil crowd. While the Packers ended last season on a high, and the Eagles ended last season on a low, it will be the Eagles who get off to a 1-0 start thanks to huge games from quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Prediction: Eagles 31, Packers 24
