Passenger Tries To Jump out of Plane, Video Appears To Show
A passenger attempted to hijack a domestic Mexican flight on Sunday morning, trying to force its diversion to the United States, according to Volaris Airline.
A video shared on social media shows a chaotic scene as the man apparently attempts to jump out of the plane.
A witness on the plane reported that a man traveling with his wife and children allegedly seized a flight attendant, held a pen to her neck as a threat, and gripped the plane’s door handle, claiming he would jump to his death while threatening to take the flight attendant with him.
The man succeeded in partially opening the plane door, prompting passengers to scream, cry, and plead desperately for him to stop.
Footage seems to show a fellow passenger intervening, pulling the man away from the door while the crew worked together to subdue the hijacker.
According to the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Mexican authorities identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Mexican national named Mario, who assaulted a flight attendant and attempted to access the cockpit in an effort to redirect the flight to the United States.
The airline Volaris said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Volaris informs that this morning on flight 3041, which was covering the route from El Bajío to Tijuana, a passenger tried, by the use of force, to divert the plane towards the United States. The crew acted in accordance with the established safety procedures and, in accordance with protocol, the plane was diverted to the airport of Guadalajara, where the airline placed the passenger in the custody of the competent authorities.”
The airline said all passengers and crew were safe.

“Volaris regrets the inconvenience that this situation has caused,” the airline added. “For Volaris, the safety of our passengers and crews is the top priority.”
Newsweek has contacted Volaris airlines for comment by email and via the Whatsapp messaging service.
The flight left from El Bajio Airport in León and was destined for Tijuana.
The plane landed in Guadalajara, Mexico, where the suspect was removed from the aircraft and detained.
According to ABC News, airline personnel reported that the suspect claimed a close family member had been kidnapped and that he received a death threat after departing from El Bajio, warning him not to travel to Tijuana.
The crew and remaining passengers proceeded with their flight to Tijuana after the man was removed from the aircraft.
