Patrick Mahomes Assigns Blame After Chiefs’ Loss to Broncos
The AFC West division race just got a lot tougher for the Kansas City Chiefs if they hope to claim the title for a tenth straight season.
On Sunday at the Empower Field at Mile High, Kansas City held a 19-16 lead in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell on a game-winning field goal from kicker Will Lutz. The loss dropped the Chiefs to 5-5, while the Broncos improved to 9-2, firmly atop the division.
After the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took much of the responsibility on himself, emphasizing that the team didn’t execute late when it mattered most.
“Having an opportunity at the end of the game and not coming through… just being better in that scenario… There are things here and there, but I think that’s the biggest one,” Mahomes said postgame via Charles Goldman. “You want opportunities… but I didn’t come through.”

Mahomes finished the game completing 29 of 45 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and just one rush for three yards.
He also addressed the Chiefs’ current position in the AFC West and the challenge of making up ground to get back into the division race. Kansas City is still trailing the Los Angeles Chargers as well.
“It’s going to be tough to get back into the division race… all you can focus on is next week,” Mahomes said. “We’ve got to learn as much as possible, knowing that we’ve got a great opponent coming into Arrowhead next week… we’ve got to move forward.”
