Patrick Mahomes Gets Painfully Real About Chiefs Record
The Kansas City Chiefs are riding high on their shutout of the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, and the dominating 31-0 win has given them lots to feel good about.
The victory marked the Chiefs’ first regular-season shutout since 2011, which ironically also was against the Raiders.
The win also marked Kansas City’s second shutout under head coach Andy Reid and its first since yielding zero points to the Texans during the wild-card round of the 2015 postseason, according to the Chiefs’ website.
So, just how much badly did the Chiefs dominate with the Raiders? Pretty badly.
Vegas only had three first downs in the entire game, marking the “fewest first downs for any team in a single game since the 2008 season,” according to the Chiefs. “It was just the fifth time since 2000 that a team picked up three or fewer first downs in a regular-season game.:
Plus, Kansas City held the Raiders to only 95 yards of total offense, marking only the fifth defensive performance over the past three seasons in which an opponent got fewer than 100 yards from scrimmage.
And while Sunday’s win was a nice feather in the cap for the Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t quite content.
Speaking with reporters after the game, he said that he wasn’t happy with Kansas City’s record, but he believes the team is moving in the right direction.
“Obviously, our record is still not where we want it to be,” Mahomes said about the team’s 4-3 record. “You can see from the offense [and] defense [that] we’ve had bright moments this season, and now it seems like we’re coming together as a team. We’re still early, and we have everything out in front of us. [It’s now about] how can we be better this next week going up against a good football team.”
Reid didn’t comment on the team’s record, but he did say that he was incredibly proud of the Chiefs for pulling off another big win under pressure.

“Great win… there are all kinds of good stats to go over. I’m not sure I can cover them all,” Reid said. “There are a lot of people that played really well. I’m proud of them for that. Coming off of an emotional win against the Lions, and then coming into this thing and playing with the energy that we played with [was big].”
The Chiefs don’t have much time to rest, because their bye week isn’t until 10. Next up, they’ll take on the Washington Commanders next Monday at home.
